sunday love04/08/14

(my sweet uncle and aunt)

I was recently chatting with a girlfriend about how easy it is to get caught up in the comparison game. I’m a rule follower by nature, so when it comes to relationships I often judge mine against others, wondering what’s “normal” and how it “should” look. We put an unfair amount of pressure on ourselves with the judging/comparing/perfection-striving, as I’m sure our moms did and their moms did, but social media certainly has not helped the cause. My friend said her mom is constantly reminding her that you can’t judge your insides against other people’s outsides.

All of this to say, the Sunday I’m in Love series is meant to guide and inspire but it’s also meant to be a reminder that there is no normal. All relationships are different — each as weird and valid and special and complicated and beautiful as the next.

Charleston’s Snowpocalypse has been a hilariously exciting experience. Businesses, schools, restaurants, and some major bridges are shut down due to a little snow/ice wintery mix. But everybody loves a snow day, and Charleston is looking extra beautiful all covered in white. This morning Blake and I walked to the Battery in the freezing rain (which hurts coming down) — and I then baked some chocolate chip cookies and started working on my taxes. There’s something about the freedom of knowing I don’t have to get anything done that makes me feel extra productive.

Stay cozy out there!

I love the new year, I’m a sucker for a clean slate — it’s the perfect way to reflect and recharge. Among getting organized and being kind to myself, visiting the ocean more often is one of my many goals for 2014. Seeing the sun rise and set shouldn’t be limited to summer vacations. Plus, Frankie loves it.

Happy New Year, friends! Cheers to a happy, healthy, and sunshiny 2014.

Just popping in to share some for-fun portraits I took of these select willing family members (ahem, mom and Isabel) before our big Christmas dinner at Nan Nan’s house. I love staring at all these incredible faces — ranging from 15 to 93 years old. Time with my family has been short this year, which makes every moment of it even sweeter.

The Outer Banks feel a bit more wild than the serene scapes of Charleston, and that wildness reaches its peak during the off-season. The Sound is choppy with whitecaps and the wind is fierce (our house on stilts sways a bit) — but when you have a cozy place to run back to, that crazy-cold wind is invigorating. Frankie and I ran many-a-lap around the house to expend some energy.

Thanksgiving, as always in our family, was super low-key. My mom insists that it’s an easy meal to pull off and she does so with little to no planning or help. For the rest of us, Thanksgiving means pure R&R. We don’t know anybody in the vicinity, there’s not much to go out and see — it comes down to reading, walking, and eating — and when my sister and I have nothing to do is when the magic happens. I love the time with her to be unapologetically goofy and unproductive. Now the problem is getting through these next few weeks because after decorating our mini tree last night while listening to Charlie Brown Christmas music, I am in full-blown holiday mode.
