Discovering inspiring women doing rad things is one of my favorite things about the internet and as Emmadime’s Lovely Lady column is a go-to spot for these discoveries, I was thrilled when Hannah Ferrara of Another Feather asked me to photograph her for it. A few of the people with whom I surround myself have recently taken up beekeeping. Their first hive installation was quite the momentous occasion and some of us non-beekeepers gathered to observe. The installation was a success, despite some high drama which involved “robber bees” declaring war on the new hives. The excitement was almost too much for Blake as he adorably confessed an hour later that his heart was still pounding.
Beekeeping became a goal earlier this year over casual dinner talk — and how rewarding it must have been for them to bring the idea to life: to build the hive, take the class, order bees, install bees, and so on. Now, I reap the benefits and wait for honey.
As a lady of the slightly squeamish, mostly non-meat-eating variety, I always placed taxidermy in the “creepy” category without a second thought — that is, until I met Becca Barnet. Whether it’s an installation of five hundred bees or a cute fox with surprised eyes and a perma-grin, Becca’s taxidermy is beautiful, thought-provoking, and truly far from creepy.
